Best 15 Mouth-Smacking Mangoes in Indian Culture That You Should Not Miss This Summer
India is a home to different types of mangoes grown across different plant breeds. Out of the numerous breeds, Indiacafe24 have selected the top 15 mangoes that all must enjoy this summer.
Summer being the season of Mangoes, people love to enjoy every bite of it. Mango is the king of fruits in summer. There are N Numbers of varieties of Mangoes available in the market and we are presenting you the list of mangoes region wise.
Alphonso or Hapus Mangoes: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujrat in India
At No 1 we have Alphonso, the king of mangoes. This mango is widely grown in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat. It is most popular breed of mangoes cultivated in India. This mango has a golden texture and is utterly sweet in taste. The breed has been christened after the soldier of Portugal, Afonso de Albuquerque who invaded India and established colonies in Goa.
Chausa or Chaunsa: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh in India
This mango is grown in large quantity in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. In reality this mango breed is a South Asian one and also cultivated in Pakistan. Both nation export this mangoes in large quantities. It is uniquely sweet in taste among the various other mangoes grown in Northern India. Chausa has a yellow skin and fleshy-sweet pulp. This sweetest mango hits the market around July-Aug when the season of mangoes is on the verge of ending.
Banganapalli /Began Phali or Benishan Mangoes: Tamil Nadu, Telengana, and Andhra Pradesh in India
Banganapalli mango is grown in the states of Tamil Nadu, Telengana, and Andhra Pradesh. Banganapalli is also known as Began Phali and it is one of the most common types of mangoes in India. This mango is diagonally oval in shape and has a thick skin with yellow flesh. The pulp of the mango has a smooth fleshy texture and has no fibres within. The mango has its name after the town Banganapalle in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. It covers almost 70% percent area of the mango cultivation zone of the state. It got introduced by none other than the Farmers of Banaganapalli.
Kesar or Gir Kesar Mangoes: Gujarat in India
Another widely popular mango in India is the “Kesar”. It is a native of the regions of Gujarat only. The mango is golden in colour and has a fleshy-juicy texture along with a sweet taste. The famous “aamras” of the Guajarati people is made from this variety of mango. Owing to its saffron fragrance the fruit is given its name. The ‘Gir Kesar’ mango, is also called Kesar, and cultivated in the foothills of Girnar region of Gujarat state. The pulp of this mango is bright orange.
Dussehri or Malihabadi: Lucknow & Mallihabad of Uttar Pradesh in India
The Dasheri mango originates from Lucknow & Mallihabad of Uttar Pradesh. The name Dasheri given based on the name of the Dasheri village located close to Kakori, UP. In this village there is a 200-year-old mother plant of Dasheri breed and it still exists to bear this fruit on alternate year. The mango is aromatic in nature with a shape of medium size and a yellowish-green skin. It has a fibreless texture and a sweet, fleshy-juicy pulp. This mango is best known for its taste and shape.
Langra or Banarasi Langra: Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh
Langra is one of the mouthwatering mango breeds in India. This variety is grown in abundance in the places of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Bihar, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh. It is the most prevalent variety of mangoes in the parts of Northern India. The mango got its name from the Hindi word “langra” which means lame. Actually, it is rumored that this breed was first grown in the plantation of a man who was lame in Varanasi. The mango is oval in shape and has a greenish-yellow skin.
Himsagar: Bihar, and West Bengal in India
Himsagar is one of the top 10 delicious mangoes widely found in India. The fruit has its dominance in the states of Bihar, and West Bengal. But its major presence is found in districts of Malda, Nadia,Murshidabad and Hooghly of West Bengal. This breed is ideally best suited for drinks and sweet course. The fruit is fibreless and has a juicy, creamy, and smooth texture. The pleasant aroma with unparalleled sweetness is the USP of this Mango.
Kishan Bhog: Murshidabad in West Bengal in India
Next we have Kishan bhog aam. It is indeed one of the best mangoes found in India. The fleshy and juicy pulp, the round shape and the sweet taste dominates the mango cultivation zone of Murshidabad in West Bengal, known as the Nawabi City.
Totapuri: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana in India
This breed of mango is also in out list of popular mangoes and grown in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. This type of mango is not known for its sweet taste rather is known for its worth in making salads, pickles, and drinks. The breed has a hooked tip that resembles the beak of a parrot and thus, has got its name, “totapuri”.
Paheri: Goa
In the list we have another juicy mango breed, Paheri This variety is extensively grown in the parts of Goa and coastal areas of Maharashtra. The fruit has a taste which is a mixture of sweet and acid. The mango also has a mild spicy fragrance and is quite fleshy-juicy in nature.
Lakshmanbhog: Malda, West Bengal in India
Lakshmanbhog Mangoes are visible in markets in the months of June-July and cultivated in the Malda district of West Bengal. It comes with a golden reddish skin and with required amount of sweetness to satisfy your sweet tooth. It is one of the selected variety by West Bengal Government to get the tag of export quality.
Malgoa or Mulgoba: Salem, Tamil Nadu in India
Malgoa or Mulgoba mangoes are having an unique specialty of having very thick skin and cultivated mostly in Salem region of Tamil Nadu. It is available in market in the months of July – August. The size of these mangoes are quite big and very juicy.
Raspuri: Karnataka
One of the most popular varieties of Mangoes in India is Raspuri. It is cultivated in the Bangalore, Ramanagara and Kolar region of Karnataka state. The availability is more in the months of May and June. This oval shaped sweet and juicy mango can win hearts of people in love with authentic sweetness.
Neelam: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka
Neelam mangoes, are mostly grown in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka are golden-red in color and small sized compared to other available varieties. In addition to its supreme fragrance, Neelam mangoes are also known for many health benefits. Available in the months of May, June and July.
Amrapali: Across India
Amrapalli is one such breed of mangoes whose presence you can find across India. Interestingly its a hybrid quality Mango breed which was first created in the year 1971. Its a breed of Neelam and Dasheri and tastes uniquely awesome. It tastes brilliant when full ripe but comes with lower shelf life.
Mangoes are fruits that can be consumed in ways best suited to the consumer. Some prefers to squeeze out the juice and have the juice as drinks while some prefers to have mangoes as a dessert course. However, the taste of a mango lies in its simple form. Cutting the mangoes in small pieces and eating them in its natural form can give you the taste of the heavenly texture, flesh and taste of “AAM”.

My fav is Raspuri and I couldnt phantom it was not available outside Karnataka when i first moved to Bombay. Thats when i learnt that mangoes of certain variety are specific to some places only. Thank you for enlightening more about the origin of each. Good post.
Alphonso mangoes are my all time favorites. There are so many types of mangoes available in different states. I have tasted alphonso and Kesar. The other ones are also available in markets after the alphonso season is gone but I have never tried them. Seeing your article I am craving for now.

Thank you so much for the well-researched post and the stories related to each variety. I spent most of my vacations as a child on my grandparents’ farm with a huge mango orchard. The love for mangoes has continued since then. Langras are my favorite.
I didn’t eat many mangoes this summer as i watching my sugar. I love Totapuri….have childhood memories of climbing trees and eating these raw. They are sour and taste yummy with salt and chilli powder! We make flavoured rice, chutney & even dal with these.
Wow… I had no idea the theories behind all the names given to these mangoes. Now I’ll be able to explain to kids why its name is Langra. Nothing beats Dusheri and Amrapali in my opinion 💗

All those mouthwatering mango photos made me crave for one!!!! argh!!! I haven’t tried mangoes from India though. I only know indian mangoes, a kind of mango we have in the Philippines which I think despite being called that way, isn’t really imported from India. Everyone in my family is a certified mango monster so any mango will do! haha
