Exploring Barbie’s Secrets: 20 Facts that May Surprise You!
Remember when you were a kid and had a Barbie doll? You might have spent hours fixing her shiny hair, setting up her fancy house, or pretending your bathtub was her cool pool. Well, Barbie has already hit the silver screen for the first time and the reviews are not that pleasing. Whatever be the silver screen Barbie reviews are, but we all have a soft corner for that Barbie with whom we played in childhood.
But my story was different as I met her only at few of my friends house only. I never had my personal Barbie and there are 2 reasons behind that. Firstly Barbie was and is an expensive doll. It was hard for my parents to afford when I was a kid. Secondly my parents remained too practical towards life and so never wanted me and my elder sister to live in the fantasy world. But I like Barbie because I love her smile which I found to be very attractive all the time.
Barbie’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, and she made her first appearance on March 9, 1959, at a toy fair in New York. She’s supposed to be from a pretend place called Willows in Wisconsin. Barbie’s been a famous doll for over 50 years and is a big part of many people’s childhoods. But there are some interesting secrets about her you might not know.
1) Only her best friends call her “Barbie.”
Barbie’s full name as I mentioned is Barbara Millicent Roberts. She uses that name when she has to do adult stuff, like paying taxes!
2) She’s a small-town girl, but everyone knows her.
Even though Barbie’s story starts in a pretend town named Willows in Wisconsin, people worldwide know who she is!
3) The Roberts family has seven kids in total.
Barbie has a big family. Over the years, we’ve met her brothers and sisters – Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea, Krissy, Kelly, Tutti, and Todd.
4) One of her siblings mysteriously disappeared.
Barbie once had twin siblings named Tutti and Todd, but suddenly in 1971, Tutti vanished! In 1992, another twin, Stacie, showed up. Makes you wonder if she’s Tutti, doesn’t it?
5) The first star in Barbie’s family wasn’t even Barbie!
Back in 1967, they made a doll looking just like Twiggy, a famous teen star at the time. Years later, in 1991, the well-known M.C. Hammer joined the Barbie world, and he even came with a tape of his catchy songs.
6) Barbie likes guys who are younger than her – great news for Hammer!
Ken, Barbie’s loyal boyfriend, is two years younger than Barbie. He first showed up in toy stores in 1961.
7) Barbie has the most impressive job list ever.
Barbie has done over 200 different jobs! She’s been a zoo doctor, a police officer in Canada, a dinosaur expert, a big boss at a company, a secretary, a superhero like Catwoman, and even a rapper.
8) She’s been to space three times!
Barbie became an astronaut in 1965, even before the first moon landing. She then went back to space two more times in 1986 and 1994.
9) She’s tried to become president six times.
Barbie first tried to become president in 1992, but sadly, she never won. Maybe 2020 will be her lucky year!
10) But her first job was as a teen model.
Yes, Barbie has had many cool jobs, but her very first job was being a model when she was a teenager. If you look at how she looked the year you were born, you’ll see she’s changed a lot over the years.
11) Barbie’s home is like a mini zoo.
Barbie has had more than 40 pets! These include a parrot, a monkey, a panda, a lion cub, a giraffe, and a zebra, not to mention 21 dogs, 14 horses, three ponies, six cats, and more. With so many mouths to feed, it’s no wonder she has so many jobs! Finding out how much her dream house would cost would be fun.
12) Finding the perfect gift for her would be a real puzzle.
If Barbie were a real-life person, her body proportions would be mind-boggling 36-18-33. Imagine the challenge of finding clothes that fit!
13) It’s a good thing she has connections with the fashion elite.
Barbie has a wardrobe any fashionista would envy. She boasts of clothes from high-end fashion houses like Gucci, Versace, Vera Wang, Dolce & Gabbana, and Givenchy. She’s always ready for a red carpet-event!
14) And oh my, the mountain of clothes she owns!
Barbie’s fashion collection has required over 100 million yards of fabric! That’s enough to wrap around the Earth over 2,000 times. This makes Mattel, the maker of Barbie, one of the world’s largest clothing manufacturers.
Barbie has a breathtaking collection of shoes – over 1 billion pairs, in fact. That’s a shoe for every occasion, from high-heeled stilettos for parties to comfy sneakers for her morning runs. She must have a massive closet to store them all!
16) Barbie is still as simple as she used to be.
The first Barbie, made in 1959, came with just one thing – a black and white striped swimsuit. She had blonde or brunette hair and always looked sideways with a cheeky wink. She didn’t even look straight until 1971. Want to play some fun and different girl games? Here are some that go beyond just dressing up and putting on makeup.
17) Barbie hasn’t really become more expensive over the years.
The first Barbie that looked to the side cost $3. That would be about $23.97 today. Think that’s expensive? Some rare Barbie dolls can sell for hundreds of dollars!
18) But you might spend a lot more if you’re a real fan.
Some special edition Barbies can cost up to $5,000! That’s a lot of money, but big fans like Bettina Dorfmann don’t mind. She has the biggest collection of Barbie dolls in the world, with over 15,000 dolls. Here are 13 of the most expensive Barbie dolls sold today.
19) The Barbie sold the most ever was the 1992 Totally Hair Barbie.
This Barbie had super long hair that went to the floor.
20) The good news is plenty of Barbies to go around.
The company that makes Barbie, Mattel, says someone buys a Barbie doll somewhere in the world every three seconds. Did you know about all the controversies around Barbie dolls? You might have missed these.

Personally speaking, I was never a Barbie fan. I find her to be too thin and pointy. I like my dolls to be chubby and cuddly, and Barbie never fits the bill. She is too perfect and sends out the wrong message of a ZERO figure. Also, I’m not a fan of the world that Barbie creates. It’s a bit too fake and out of reality. The glam outfits, fancy backgrounds, and luxurious lifestyles are things that children can never relate to in real life. It gives kids an unrealistic expectation of what their lives should be like which can have negative effects on their mentality.
Irrespective of gender, Barbie is one of the wealthiest gifts every child would have got and a fan of that adorable doll. However, I personally feel and lately, realize Barbie dolls aren’t worth of hype as it throws kids who have it into an improbable and away from reality and the influence of the Western cultural world.
Fascinating insights! Barbie has such a rich history. Thanks for sharing these surprising facts. Can’t wait to learn more!
