Upon first hearing the name “The Chronicler Of The Hooghly”, I thought that the book would be a collection of memoirs of the author Shakti Ghosal. However, I soon realized that the book is actually a collection of 4 short stories spanning different times and all based in old Kolkota. The cover page of the book designed in a simple yet appealing manner and features a man in a hoodie overlooking the Howrah bridge in the backdrop of the setting sun.
Each story in the book reflects the different aspects of human nature accurately and gives rise to various feelings in the readers.
The first story tells the tale of Samir, who while enjoying his sunset cruise on the Hooghly river, meets the enigmatic Chronicler and learns about the fabled pearl necklace that is cursed.
The next story is about the tragedies faced by Indranil and Dipen during the COVID crisis and under varying social conditions.
The third story set in 1912, is about Sujit and his wife, a couple forced to migrate to Delhi due to the shifting of the capital of the British Raj, and about their daughter Shanti, who is born through messed-up forceps delivery.
The last story is about Anjan, who after getting injured in a gas explosion meets Savio, who, in turn, makes him face his past demons.
The book is a fascinating journey to understand the various human emotions of greed, sadness, anger, besides providing an insight into the bitchness of karma. The best thing about the book is that every story has been written in a manner that makes the readers feel that it is being shown to them rather than being narrated. The language used is simple and easy to understand and the characters have been beautifully developed and presented. The short length of the book ensures that it can be completed in one sitting while providing some important life lessons to the readers. Overall I found the book to be a great read and wish Shakti all the best for its success.

The book is a fascinating journey to understand the various human emotions of greed, sadness, anger, besides providing an insight into the bitchness of karma. The best thing about the book is that every story has been written in a manner that makes the readers feel that it is being shown to them rather than being narrated. The language used in simple and easy to understand and the characters have been beautifully developed and presented. The short length of the book ensures thatit can be completed in one sitting while providing some important life lessons to the readers. Overall I found the book to be a great read and wish Shakti all the best for its success.
