I was looking for something different to read focusing on the daily lives of the common man and just then I came across Mehbub Gulley, penned by Elizabeth Kottarem. I felt that the title had a somewhat romantic touch to it. That happened especially for the word “ Mehbub” 🙂 . When reading the blurb, I came to know that the book was a collection of short stories about ordinary men and women from India.
In the year 2014, the book was published in which the author used her pseudonym Elizabeth Kottarem and in the year 2019 she republished the book under her original name Thanksy Francis
I was pleasantly surprised by the design of the book’s cover page (2019), which resembled a beautiful Madhubhani painting to further establish the connection with Indian roots.
The book comprises eighteen short stories with various themes, ranging from moral policing to divorce, child abuse to the concept of arranged marriage and even the way house helps are treated. Every story brings to fore the quaint and ordinary life led by Indians and the way they deal with the various challenges. Every story is narrated from the perspective of a protagonist, who in most cases deal with situations they face in a resourceful and often non-heroic manner. Every tale in the story has a sense of humor and brings to fore the sights and sounds that form an integral part of Indian society. I will not talk much about the stories as that will spoil the readers’ charm. Do read the book and you will love it.
Found the book to be quite entertaining and delightful, especially since I could relate to most of the situations depicted in the different stories. Despite Elizabeth’s simple style of writing, she manages to keep the readers engaged by maintaining the suspense about the fate of her characters. I wish Thanksy even greater success for this highly recommendable book.
