A king-size portion of the book industry is getting ruled by love stories. Well, unfortunately, a key segment of them offers the same man and woman saga. But the essence of true love can be much beyond these stereotyped love stories. And that proved correct by the author Ketan Bhagat. The book penned by him titled Child/Currency introduced me to a new world of love stories.
Plot: The story begins at the backdrop of Dehradun city, where Shreyas Kapoor, the protagonist, delivering a speech to the audience. He is a writer but not a successful one, but on the other hand, his brother is a famous writer Preyas Kapoor. Shreyas visited a small-town city college of Dehradun to sell the copies of his book. But he failed badly, as the expected figure of sell remained unachieved. He returned home with a heavy heart. Things were not pleasant for him even at home, and that day he ended up with a serious argument with his wife, Prakriti. He was leading unhappy married life although he was the father of his son, whom he loves so much from the core of his heart. After heated arguments, he decided to move out of the house, and he did that. But what next? After a certain time, he realized that he is missing his son Kanha and at that moment, reality badly hit him back.
Shreyas and Prakriti were all set for a divorce, and child custody turned out to be the biggest fight between the couple. Shreyas recalled the childhood episodes of his life and the way, he noticed his parents mending things between them. Prakriti remained an egoistic lady and was in no mood to allow the child to meet the father. Even the intervention of Preyas Kapoor failed to save the marriage of his brother. Life was so devastating for Shreyas that he got mentally forced to find some peace of mind meeting a dedicated prostitute for the last two years. When does a man look for such satisfaction? Certainly, when life is not happy with a partner.
All thanks to the judiciary system. It takes the side of the mother always when the decision is on child custody. It feels sad to see that in the majority of the custody cases court overlooks the father’s concern. The heartbroken father made every possible effort to get custody of his child. For him, his son is the only source of positivity for whom he can take every pain of life with a smile on his face. Tears fell from my eyes when I felt the pain of an amazing father but a failed husband, and to me, such fathers are a true blessing. Prakriti kept her son away from his father. She was constantly fetching money in name of expenses for his son from his father. Is she a mother? I doubted in many places while reading the story. A new definition of love came in front of me when I read the story. It’s the love story of a father and son. What will happen next? Will, he ever get back his child, or Kanha will remain a currency child? To know it grabs the book, and you will read a whole new concept in the love story segment.
Character development: In regards to character development, I will give 5 on 5 to Ketan Bhagat. Both the weak and strong sides of Shreyas’s character are crafted brilliantly. Yes, he may be a failure in business, and married life. But what a wonderful father he is. Prakriti’s character also developed so well to depict that yes, there are mothers like her for whom the urge to save family comes as the last priority in life. Such money-loving female characters I came across very little in my life, and I agree they exist. The associated characters in the story like, Gopal, both side parents, school principal, and others did the needed justice for the story. Kanha…. What an expression he gave when every time he met his father. In short, excellent character development by the author.
Story: It’s a new style of love story for me, and yes, such cases are there where the father is at the other end face devastation in life when separated from the child. A round of applause for the author for bringing the realistic social perspective in front of us.
Writing style: It’s a slow-paced story, and so here author could have cut shot few scenes related to the over-the-phone conversation, courtroom drama, etc. But the lucid writing style coverup the slow pace element beautifully.
Regarding the title, I will say that it is a well-picked title matching the story.
Final Verdict: 5/5 A book which all must-read. I Will be waiting to read more from Ketan Bhagat.
I got the book as a part of the review program in Outset”
