The hardships and misery faced by a majority of women across the globe have inspired many books and writers. However, only a few authors are able to present these aspects in a realistic manner without dramatizing things too much and ignoring the ability of such women to survive without the support of a knight in shining armor. I am happy to say that Bahir is one such book penned by the very promising and talented writer Monisha K Gumber
Premise:
Sawera, is a beautiful woman born in Pakistan, has faced numerous hardships throughout her life. Abandoned right after her birth, she faced much abuse as a child and even as a young woman. After getting married and divorced two times, and being left alone with four children, she moves to the Middle East, where she becomes the mistress of a wealthy businessman. Being used and exploited by men she deeply cared for and trusted, Sawera chooses to reclaim her self-respect and change her pitiful circumstances without relying on anyone.
Character Development:
I love the manner in which the author has presented the character of Sawera as a bold woman who chooses to stand up and fight for herself despite her hardships. Another character that touched my heart was that of Adan, the man who inspired Sawera and who let her go to find her true self. Other characters in the book have also been developed effectively and seem realistic.
Story:
The story is rooted in reality and does not offer any sense of fantasy or false hope or any unnecessary bravado or chivalry. The story follows the journey of Sawera as she goes beyond her own boundaries and those set by society to break free at every turn of her life.
Writing style:
The story is narrated in the first person and comes with a glossary of Urdu words that have been used throughout the brave narrative. It tries to present an honest account of the struggles and issues faced by women in the highly conservative Muslim world.
Cover Page:
The title and design of the cover page are in tandem with the theme of the book and enhance its appeal significantly.
Final Verdict:
This is a wonderful book that offers hope and optimism while also making the readers think about the plight of women in conservative societies and I give it 4.25/5.
