I did not know what to make of the book Monsoon Memories, the debut novel of Renita D’Silva when I first heard about it. My initial thoughts were that the book would be a romantic tale but I was proved wrong as I soon came to know that it was a heartwarming tale of a family with a good bit of suspense thrown in. The moment I received the book, I first checked its cover page, which is pleasantly designed but does not exactly reveal anything about what the novel is about.
Reena finds an old crumpled picture of her father and two other women, one of whom, she learns is Shirin, her father’s sister. Shirin has been living in London with her husband after she was exiled from her family eleven years back. Reena becomes curious to learn the identity of the second woman in the picture. However, little is she aware that her seemingly innocent detective hunt will result in unraveling a dark and disturbing family secret that became the reason for Shirin’s family disowning her.
The book tells a beautiful yet heartbreaking tale of family relations and the emotions of trust, hope, love, and betrayal. The story is narrated by the two main protagonists, namely Reena and Shirin, and boasts of strong character building, amazing scene creation, and a great storyline. I found the book to be a great read and that’s definitely one of the reasons behind its phenomenal success.
