Reading a crime thriller novel can be a great experience in itself, which is perhaps why I love books belonging to this genre. Recently, I got an opportunity to review The Captive, the debut novel of Lavanya Nukavarapu. The blurb described the novel as a captivating crime thriller and this further enhanced my interest in the book. Upon receiving the novel, I was greatly impressed by the design of the cover page that was a perfect visual representation of the title.
Having undergone the harrowing experience of getting abducted and then raped by three men for three weeks, Kruti Shah, manages to kill one of her abductors and escape from captivity. Although she continues to live in constant fear even after being free, she is also determined to punish the remaining culprits, especially their leader. Her case is being investigated by Madhuri Mahiwal, a self-claimed vignette for the justice of women. Despite facing various hindrances and challenges in both her personal and professional life, Madhuri is determined to help Kruti get justice. Dhananjay Bhide, a young and intelligent police officer, is deeply impacted by the plight of Kruti and wants to see justice delivered. Then there is Arayveer Thakur, the handsome and dashing police officer, who has made some mistakes in the investigation and now intends to set them right. To know the rest…. Read the book
After reading the book I was, pleasantly surprised by the competence with which Lavanya has composed this chilling thriller. Despite being her debut novel, The Captive, the plot is quite engaging and well narrated. The development of characters has been done beautifully as the story progresses ensuring that the readers feel emotionally connected with them. The third-person narration is clear, precise, and fluent and does not interfere with the suspense and thrill of the plot. Overall, I found The Captive to be the perfect thriller and a great addition to my collection.
