Our life is shaped by the choices we make and despite our best efforts, all our choices may not always be right. Even though the book Unspoken deals with this basic idea, the title does not reflect this fact. This contradiction plus the unique theme of this collection of short stories written by Sadhana Wadhwa motivated me to accept the offer of reviewing “Unspoken: A Bouquet Of Short Stories”. The cover page featuring a beautiful bouquet of colorful flowers perfectly reflects the theme of the novel. I actually did not know what to expect as I started reading this book.
As mentioned before, Unspoken is a collection of seven short stories each no more than 3-4 pages in length. Each story deals with different emotions that make it necessary for people to make a choice in life. The stories deal with how these choices shape the course of life of the key characters and the consequences they have to bear as a result of their decisions. The stories featured in the book are as follows.
Deliverance: The struggle of a married woman to choose between her husband and her new-born child and her dealings with her own guilt.
Unfinished Business: The story of lovers Mihir and Jaya and their attempts to rectify their mistakes the second time around.
Stella: The unusual friendship between Stella and Maya and their final acceptance of the truth.
Three To Tango: A tale of love between Rishaan, Kiara and Diya.
The Date: A story about Aditi’s unusual date with a loved one.
A Twist Of Fate: The story of unfortunate fate that awaited the main character, Shantanu.
The Doll: A tale of suspense about a talisman doll found by an elderly couple.
Despite their short length, each story lays a lasting impact on the readers and their ending leaves them with a sense of meaningful and full resolution. The main highlight of this short and concise collection of stories that explore the concept of love and lost love is its simple language and neat narration. Each standalone story seems to be pulsating with a rhythm and energy which ensures that the tale continues to linger in the minds of the readers long after they have completed reading the book. I truly appreciate Sadhana’s ability to portray the diverse human emotions and struggles of decision making in such an effective manner through these stories.
