Scoop is a biographical crime thriller based on the actual murder of Jotirmoy Dey a prominent crime investigator of the Mumbai Underworld, in 2011. The series features Karishma Tanna in the role of Jagruthi Pathak, whose character is based on Jigna Vora, another reporter accused of Dey’s murder. The character of Dey is essayed by Prosenjit Chatterjee and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Harman Baweja also play important roles in the series. The series has been directed by Hansal Metha, who earned much praise for his earlier series of Scam 1992. The series was released on Netflix on 2nd June 2023.
The Plot of Scoop
Jagruthi Pathak (Karishma Tanna) works as a Senior Crime Journalist for Eastern Age newspaper, while also handling the responsibilities of its Deputy Bureau Chief. Her well-established network of informers and her friendly relationship with JCP Harshavardhan Shroff (Harman Baweja) helps her achieve phenomenal success in her career. She is also supported by Imran (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), the Editor-In-Chief of Eastern Age, which makes many of her colleagues jealous.
Then Jagruthi’s world is turned upside down when a well-known journalist, Jaideb Sen (Prosenjit Chatterjee), fondly known as Dada, who works with News Day, is murdered in broad daylight by the dreaded underworld Don Chhota Rajan. Jagruti is accused of planning the murder of Jaideb Sen as she had interviewed the Don on phone just before the killing. As her own fraternity turns against her, it remains to be seen whether Jagruthi was actually involved in the killing, and if not, then who framed her and why?
The Writer and Director Combo Contribution to Scoop
The web series has been co-written by Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul and Mirat Trivedi and directed by Hansal Metha. The creators have done a great job of presenting a well-researched story that tries to highlight the ongoing nexus between media and the mafia realistically. The team has made sure that the series provides a factual representation of the extreme volatility and the increasing preference for controversy-happy journalism.
The Character Developments and Role Plays In Scoop
Karishma Tanna shines as the fearless and ambitious Jagruthi Pathak. Her portrayal of a successful journalist who suddenly finds herself in a deep mess with nobody to help or trust leaves the audience amazed. Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub and Harman Baweja have also done justice to their roles as the person who never stops believing in Jagruthi’s work ethic and the friend and accomplice who changes his standing according to circumstances respectively.
The Story Development of Scoop
The story of the webs series focuses on the inadequacies within the media sector and specifically questions the ethics behind new-age journalism where finger-pointing has become a norm rather than reporting facts. Through the tale of Jagruthi, the series tries to make the audiences think about the impact of media trials on the the lives of accused along with those associated with them. While the series does not aim to present journalists in a bad light or promote hatred for them, it does highlight the fact that modern-day journalism is less about facts and more about gossip.
Final Verdict for Scoop
Scoop is bone-chilling and thought-provoking web series that raises some serious questions about the ethics and integrity of journalists trying to attain success in a highly competitive and volatile work environment. We at IndiaCafe24 give the series a rating of 4.5 stars.

My poorly kept secret is that I love crime thrillers. With such a riveting plot and great performances, I am perplexed how did I miss it. This one is next on my list, after Blacklist.
I so much love crime thrillers to watch but this one is still remeaning, the cast looks so amazing all wonderful actors, and the plot is interesting. Thanks for sharing the review.
Wow 4.5 star is great rating. I had started watching this series but somehow, watched only for while. your post has made me curious to watch it completely. I like Karishma tanna’s acting, so that will be the another reason to watch it.
I liked this series. I could relate to that ambition and dogheadedness. I have seen this so many times. In fact, one of my seniors passed away in this race, pushing her junior out. Scams, stories, power and glamour are addictive. I actually didn’t like Karishma Tanna before this and the direction and editing is super.
Hey there, kudos for the engaging review of “Scoop”! Your detailed insights on the plot, characters, and overall theme are spot on. Love how you’ve highlighted the thought-provoking aspects. A solid 4.5 stars – well deserved! Can’t wait to watch it. 🎬👏
Your review seems to be gripping but thrillers are just not my viewing likes any more. I grew up on thriller books and movies but sad but true that after my life tragedies, I stick only to Romcoms. I just cannot take violence in any form.
I have watched this series and I am guilty of watching it at a stretch compromising on my sleep but I can say it worth it. Loved the acting of Tammanna and the thrill kept the series intriguing.
Hansal Mehta is the name that made me watch this series on the day of its launch on OTT itself :). And surely my review is pretty similar to your thoughts penned down in this post .
I recently saw the trailer and saved this series in my list to catch later. I love such spine-chilling thrillers with a spike of reality in it. Thank you for your crisp and very well articulated review.
