The Cruel King of Ashudhar by RH Rose can be best defined, as a fantasy thriller. You will be shocked to know that I am not at all a fantasy fan. Well, the thriller element which I smelled in the book blurb dragged me to pick this book. But how far the book managed to match my expectation, is something that will get revealed when you read the full review.
Plot:
This plot revolves around two main characters. One is Kirti, the female protagonist, and the other one is Zavi, the male protagonist. Zavi gets introduced in the story as the adoptive brother of Kirti’s best friend. He is not like other normal people of his age. Although different from each other, Kirti got attracted to Zavi and fell in love. But the response from his side was quite weird and painful for Kirti. Zavi didn’t respond well towards Kirti when he understood the soft corner, for him in Kirti’s heart. The story entered the fantasy world the moment the realization came into the limelight that both he and Kirti, can see the cat, which is invisible for others.
One day Kirti discovered her in the kingdom of Ashudhar, where Zavi is the king. Kirti looked for opportunities to flee from the place. Will the lovers reconcile, or will Kirti be able to flee from Ashudhar? It forms the rest part of the story.
Story:
Why Zavi is so different, and how Kirti finds herself connected with him? Is there any unknown secret connecting them? Altogether the story is quite interesting, and I never thought that I will ever like fantasy. I am glad that the author proved me wrong. The story is a perfect blend of thriller and fantasy, which is the key USP of this book.
Coming to my likes and dislikes for the book:
-
If you don’t read the blurb and look at the cover, you may get confused as a book of the animal kingdom. The cover could have been better.
-
The Cruel King Of Ashudhar Well, the title of the book indicates a sense of thrill with a blend of fantasy.
-
Now, as already mentioned, the story is a combo of fantasy and thriller, how that came out? The proportionate blending of the genres is not an easy job, but the author did it beautifully.
-
Maintained a decent flow in the writing style from start, till end.
-
Character development is done well. It made the reader in me keen to know more about what next.
-
The book turned out to be a bit lengthy, and to complete I need to put my bedside reading lamp on for a longer duration. No regrets. But, the length could have been trimmed down, to reduce the pages without affecting story flow.
In short, it is a good book for fantasy lovers. For thriller lovers, if you are ready to taste fantasy, go for this book. You need to invest time to read and understand the book because of its length. It turns the book slow-paced. I rate this book 4/5 and will wish to read more from the author.
